A Heartbreaking Part of Veterinary Medicine

On 20 Jun, 2019

Good morning everyone, I had to do something very sad a few weeks ago, and I wanted to share with you because I have had a hard time processing the emotions myself. I had to euthanize a dog that was a public health risk. This sweet girl was young, in good health, and I had worked with her prior and had no issues. This same sweet dog had also attempted to bite multiple people in the face, attacked multiple people on the street, and grossly injured an elderly person when she actually did bite. As a veterinarian, when someone tells me about a dogs misbehavior I instinctively defend the dog. We are emotionally compassionate people who root for the animal in all situations and when a dog bites someone out of fear, most of the time I truly believe that it was a situation that could have been avoided.

We will get messages from people we barely talk to, or approached at parties/events all in order to ask our opinion about an issue that you are dealing with regarding your pet. More times than not that conversation turns specifically to distrust of Veterinarians and cost of Veterinary care.

Waking up to the Facts About Anesthesia

On 23 Oct, 2018

I can’t tell you how many times I have discussed with clients about the risks vs rewards of general anesthesia, especially in the older pet. The majority of our pets undergo anesthesia and surgery at least once in their lives for their spay or neuter; yet when we approach it again later in life, there is a general nervousness and misunderstanding about what general anesthesia entails.
